“Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Saturday's card at Del Mar features a pair of Graded Stakes scheduled to be run over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. I'll be taking a look at both contests below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.
RACE 8 - The Eddie Read (Grade 2) - Nine Furlongs Turf
A's
# 5 Award Winner (Morning Line 8-1)
B's
# 2 United (ML 5-2)
# 4 Count Again (ML 5-1)
# 6 Smooth Like Strait (ML 9-5)
C's
# 1 Vintage Print (ML 20-1)
# 3 Say the Word (ML 3-1)
# 7 Restrainedvengence (ML 10-1)
Award Winner, winner of the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham last time out, has won or been within a half length of the winner in each of his four starts since coming west and joining the barn of David Hofmans.
United didn't show much last time out in the aforementioned Grade 2 Charles Whittingham while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite. Still, I think United will benefit from the cutback in distance, and United is a prior winner of this event, a subset for which I always have a soft spot.
Count Again could be the one running best late; while Smooth Like Straight, winner of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile last time out, projects to be the one that they'll have to catch if they want to win. The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.
RACE 9 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt
A’s
# 3 Joe Don Looney (ML 6-1)
B’s
# 1 R M C Hook'em (ML 8-1)
# 6 Clem Labine (ML 3-1)
# 7 Jazz Hands (ML 7-2)
C's
# 2 Push to Start (ML 4-1)
# 4 I'll Stand Taller (ML 5-1)
# 5 First Prez (ML 10-1)
# 8 Hammering Lemon (ML 12-1)
# 9 Intense (ML 20-1)
For those who note such things, none of the runners entered in this field will be leaving the gate with a price tag on their head.
Joe Don Looney took the Place at this class level last time out. Joe Don Looney is also a prior winner over this main track. R M C Hook'em was a winner in his first try over a Fast dirt track last time out.
Clem Labine disappointed as the Post Time Favorite last time out while taking the Place against classier competition. Jazz Hands has run well in the past when competing on dirt, and Jazz Hands should appreciate the drop in class. The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.
RACE 10 - (F) The San Clemente (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Turf
A's
# 2 Going Global (Ire) (ML 4-5)
B's
# 9 Madone (ML 4-1)
C's
# 1 Pizzazz (ML 12-1)
# 4 Freedom Flyer (ML 30-1) # 5 Tetragonal (Ire) (ML 8-1)
# 6 Equilove (Ire) (ML 20-1)
# 7 Jibber Jabber (Ire) (ML 15-1)
# 8 Dramatizer (ML 30-1)
# 10 Karakatsie (ML 10-1) # 11 Nimbostratus (Fr) (ML 12-1)
Scratch # 3 Founder's Day (ML 30-1) and # 12 Closing Remarks (ML 6-1)
Going Global (Ire) is undefeated since arriving in California, and Going Global is clearly the one to beat here. Madone showed nothing last time out in the Grade 3 Honeymoon; but Madone has done this before, returning off the freshening after a poor effort to defeat Graded Stakes company. The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.
RACE 11 - (F) Clm $16k N2L - Six Furlongs Dirt
A’s
# 1 Angel's Advocate (ML 7-2)
B’s
# 5 Sweet Soulmate (ML 6-1)
# 6 Traffic Stopper (ML 3-1)
# 10 Big Passion (ML 5-1)
C's
# 2 Season to Remember (ML 20-1)
# 3 Plum Wild (ML 8-1)
# 4 Queen Verrazano (ML 30-1)
# 7 Heart River (ML 20-1) # 8 Chewy Chewy Good (ML 8-1)
# 9 Run Like Kona (ML 12-1)
# 11 Daring Cat (ML 12-1)
# 12 Pasito (ML 20-1)
Angel's Advocate drops in for a tag for the first time in her four race career; the class drop should do Angel's Advocate good. Sweet Soulmate is another that looks like she will benefit from the move down the class ladder.
Traffic Stopper took the Place against classier competition last time out. A concern with Traffic Stopper is that she may be settling for too many minor awards, as Traffic Stopper has taken the Place in nearly half of her twelve career starts.
Big Passion could improve with the cutback in distance. The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.
