"Nobody ever went broke cashing tickets." - John Sullivan
Sunday's featured race at Del Mar is the Grade 1 Clement L Hirsch, a two turn dirt route for fillies and mares. I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I attempt to pick some wieners, errrr, that is, winners, and collect some easy money, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.
RACE 7 - Md $40k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt
A’s
# 4 Frost Warning (Morning Line 4-1)
B's
# 2 K P Silver Bullet (ML 4-1)
# 5 Grandconcourse (ML 8-1)
# 8 Diamond Ranger (ML 8-1)
# 12 Kattath (ML 7-2)
C's
# 1 Love of the Sport (ML 15-1)
# 3 Philipie Fast (ML 20-1)
# 6 Thanks Maggio (ML 12-1)
# 7 No Hang Charlie (ML 12-1)
# 9 Danza's Moon (ML 30-1)
# 10 Me Macho (ML 15-1)
# 11 Honor Among Men (ML 8-1)
Scratch the Also Eligible, # 13 Abi Gezunt (ML 12-1)
Frost Warning, Grandconcourse, Diamond Ranger, and Kattath are all dropping in for a tag for the first time. I put Frost Warning on top because I think Frost Warning has the breeding best suited to Sunday's six and a half furlong distance.
K P Silver Bullet took the Place in his debut (and only prior dirt race) two starts back. K P Silver Bullet was claimed in each of his two career races, which, well, must mean something. The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.
RACE 8 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Five Furlongs Turf
A’s
# 7 El Diablo Rojo (ML 4-1)
B’s
# 2 Fly the Sky (ML 6-1)
# 5 In Vronsky Style (ML 3-1)
# 6 Catemaco (ML 4-1)
C's
# 1 Riding With Dino (ML 8-1)
# 3 Star Racer (ML 6-1)
# 8 Thismustbetheplace (ML 15-1)
# 9 Teton Valley (ML 8-1)
# 10 Stir the Pot (ML 20-1)
# 12 Nichiren (ML 8-1)
Scratch # 4 Bam Bam Again (ML 30-1); # 11 Ascot Storm (ML 12-1); # 13 Too Late (ML 4-1); and # 14 Tiz a Speed Bomb (ML 20-1)
For those who take note of such things, none of the runners in this field will be leaving the gate with a price tag on their head.
El Diablo Rojo was a winner at this class level at Santa Anita last time out, and El Diablo Rojo could be the one reeling in all the speedsters in the final strides. Fly the Sky get the blinkers back on, a move with which Trainer Steve Miyadi tends to do well.
In Vronsky Style and Catemaco are both facing winners for the first time after solidly defeating non-Claiming Maidens in their respective last out races. The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.
RACE 9 - (F) The Clement L Hirsch (Grade 1) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt
A's
# 3 As Time Goes By (ML 8-5)
B's
None
C's
# 4 Paige Anne (ML 15-1)
# 5 Cover Version (ML 30-1)
# 6 Venetian Harbor (ML 2-1)
# 7 Shedaresthedevil (ML 7-5)
Scratch # 1 Warren's Showtime (ML 8-1) and # 2 Clockstrikestwelve (ML 30-1)
"The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet." - Damon Runyon
Under normal circumstances, I would be going three deep in the leg, using Venetian Harbor and Shedaresthedevil on the main ticket along with As Time Goes By. But being as I was unable to get a real handle on any of the other three legs in this sequence, there was no way for me to construct a sensible ticket without singling in this contest. So it's As Time Goes By solo, with all others being used as backup "C" Selections.
RACE 10 - (F) Md $50k - Eight Furlongs Turf
A’s
# 2 Mongolian Mission (ML 5-1)
B's
# 1 Beirut Beauty (ML 20-1)
# 5 Quinevere (Ger) (ML 5-1)
# 6 The Ginger Queen (Ire) (ML 7-2)
# 8 Shizaam (Ire) (ML 4-1)
C's
# 3 I Give Up (ML 6-1)
# 4 Fabiolla (GB) (ML 5-1)
# 7 Bellize (ML 12-1)
# 9 Pluma (ML 30-1)
# 10 Big Moon (ML 12-1)
# 11 Return to Harbor (ML 30-1)
Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 12 Golden Journey (ML 4-1); # 13 Miracle of Hope (ML 12-1); # 14 Witch Moon (ML 5-2)
Mongolian Mission has finished in the Trifecta the two times that she has competed at this class level. Beirut Beauty and Quinevere (Ger) are two that could move up with the drop in class.
The Ginger Queen (Ire) ships in from the East, where last time out The Ginger Queen took the Place at this approximate class level while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite. Shizaam (Ire) seems to keep going up against next out winners; perhaps the class drop Sunday will get Shizaam to the wire in time. The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.
OK, that's the analysis. Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:00 EDT / 5:00 PDT. Good luck to all.
Peace and Love,
Jimbo
